Guess Who’s Back?

Key players in the NFL are so important, they are sometimes leaders or backups but their role as a player is important. Two players / leaders were missed last season because of injury. Never has a team changed the way the Texans has when J.J. Watt and Deshaun Watson was not present in the game. Watt an already established defensive player was injured for the 3rd season after dominating the NFL in the first 5.

Watson who was coming off a win against Alabama as National Champion only to be selected 12th …. according to experts, one year starter Mitchell Trubisky was a better QB and better suited for the NFL. Watson injury affected the Texans offense and much as Watts injury affected the Texans defense. But that was last season, Guess Who’s Back? … and the got help … Read more

I don’t think there was any player who was more important to the Texans success than J.J. Watt. The 6’5″ 295lb DE took the NFL by storm by recording 394 tackles, 76 QB sacks, 47 passed defensed, 15 forced fumbles, and 1 interception for a TD. He has been name defensive player of the year 3 of his first 5 years. He has been the NFL sack leader twice totaling 20 sacks twice in his career.

However the last two years 2016 and 2017 he only played 8 games due to injury. It seem so went Watt so went the Texans. I watched him dominate the Cincinnati Bengals in a playoff game in which he batted a thrown pass to himself for an interception and ran it in for a touchdown.

In 2017 the Texans drafted their second QB in franchise history in the 1st round, Deshaun Watson. Here are some views about Watson;

“He showed what he’s capable of doing against Alabama last year. That was his best game of the season. But I just don’t see him as the pocket passer like a lot of people prefer in our league.”

Another NFL scout who studied Watson intently this season added: “He doesn’t have NFL accuracy. The timing throws, Bang 8 (skinny post) or a comeback throw, he doesn’t do any of that.”

Deshaun Watson showed why he should have been selected the #1 player in the draft. Teams couldn’t go to sleep on this guy … without a defense he managed to lead all NFL quarterbacks with 19 touchdowns passing with 8 interceptions, plus 2 rushing Tds.

What makes him special? He’s a clutch player, it’s to early to put him among the elite but he’s might be there sooner than Brady, Rodgers, Brees, Ben, Wilson. Other than Ben these guys didn’t have great defenses or great WRs but managed to beat teams because they are above the rest.

What make fans get excited about Watson is not his win but the loses … Brady, Wilson, Smith … might have lost those games if they weren’t the QBs that they are … Game 3 Texans led New England 33-28 with 30 seconds in the 4th quarter … Brady throws a strike to Brandon Cook in the endzone to go ahead 35-33.  Game 5 the Chiefs led 23-13 into the 4th quarter … they had to fight to and hold on when Watson threw 3 touchdowns in the 4th, final score 42-34. Then there was Game 7  … the game reminded me of an Ali and Frazier fight. All day the two teams Seattle and Texans were going back and fourth scoring until there was 26 seconds left in the game. Wilson threw a strike to a wide open Jimmy Graham for the lead and win. Final score 41-38.

After that game Watson suffered an non-contact injury and underwent a successful ACL surgery but was lost for the rest of the 2017 season.

Texans stars J.J. Watt and Deshaun Watson are expected to be healthy for the start of training camp, according to NFL Media.

The report said both have progressed so well in their physical rehab they’re not expected to begin camp on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list.

Watt, a three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year, suffered a broken leg in Week 5. Watson was off to an MVP-caliber start in his rookie season before suffering a torn ACL in late October. The dual-threat quarterback passed for almost 1,700 yards and 19 touchdowns in seven games.

This news correlates with recent updates on both players. Texans coach Bill O’Brien said at the NFL meetings in late March that Watson was “ahead of schedule, but there’s still a lot of work to put in.”

With the additions of the free agents and rookies the Texans are in position to reclaim the AFC South.

Just another opinion.
